PublicPREP (www.publicprep.org) is a New York-based charter management organization (CMO) that seeks to dramatically impact public education by creating and managing exceptional single-gender schools where students achieve high levels of academic excellence and become successful members of society. PublicPREP was created in 2008 to replicate the early success of its flagship school, Girls Preparatory Charter School (“Girls Prep”), New York City’s first all-girls public elementary school. PublicPREP’s model focuses on the whole child, emphasizing creativity and health alongside academic excellence, engages parents in their child’s education, and develops talent among educators. PublicPREP’s leadership team aspires to provide a world-class, single-gender education that rivals elite private schools in New York City and boarding schools along the northeast corridor. PublicPREP currently has two schools: Girls Prep Lower East Side (LES), which consists of an elementary school academy with grades K-4 and a middle school academy that will grow to up to grade 8, and Girls Prep Bronx, which has an elementary school academy that will grow up to grade 4. Daily instruction at PublicPREP schools includes 90 minutes of English Language Arts, 50 minutes of Mathematics, 45 minutes of Art/Music and a Physical Education/Yoga class, and 50 minutes of Social Studies/Science. Girls Prep LES was the second highest scoring charter school in New York City on the 2009 New York State English Language Arts exam and 100% of its students scored at or above grade level on the 2009 New York State Mathematics exam. Miriam Lewis Raccah, co-founder and CEO, leads PublicPREP. Ms. Raccah has a background in nonprofit management, development, and education. Before founding Girls Prep, she was Director of Business Affairs and Development for Harlem Day Charter School and, prior to that, Director of Development for Friends of the Family Academy, and Director of Non-Profit Development for The Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone. Ms. Raccah holds an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business in Finance and International Business. She has also completed the Middle Management Program at the Institute for Non-Profit Management at Columbia University.
